TEKNIK ÅK 9 ELLÄRA SID 53-55 GENOMGÅNG
Technology Year 9: Electricity 53-55 Overview
Battery and Electric Current
A battery has a positive pole (plus) and a negative pole (minus). The plus pole is positively charged, and the minus pole is negatively charged. In a round 1.5-volt battery, the button on top is the plus pole, and the bottom is the minus pole.
At the minus pole, there are too many electrons. At the plus pole, there are too few electrons. An electric current is a flow of electrons (shown as e- in the picture above). The strength of the current is measured in amperes (shortened to A).
Elektrisk spänning mäts i volt (förkortas V).
Electric Voltage
The picture above uses water to explain electric voltage. The water at the top pushes the water below, making it flow out. Voltage is like the force of the water pushing to make it spray out.
Electric voltage is measured in volts (shortened to V). Voltage is like an electric "push" that makes the electric current flow. In a battery, voltage comes from having more electrons at the minus pole than at the plus pole. This makes the electrons want to rush through the wire to the plus pole.
Electrical Symbols
When drawing how to connect batteries and light bulbs, we use special electrical symbols.
Circuit Diagram
A circuit diagram shows how batteries, light bulbs, and switches are connected. All lines in the diagram must go straight sideways or straight up and down—no diagonal lines. Batteries, light bulbs, and switches should never be drawn in a corner of the diagram.
Open and Closed Circuits
For a light bulb to shine, you need a closed circuit. In a closed circuit, the current can travel in a loop, like drawing the letter "O." The current starts at the battery, goes to the light bulb, and returns to the battery. The path is drawn from the plus pole of the battery, through the light bulb, and back to the minus pole.
Series Connection
In a series connection, batteries are connected one after another in the same circuit. Think of cars in a crash on a highway, lined up and bumping into each other. If you connect three 1.5-volt batteries in series, the total voltage is 4.5 volts because 1.5V + 1.5V + 1.5V = 4.5V.
If you connect two light bulbs in series, they will shine less brightly than if you only used one bulb. If you unscrew one bulb, the other stops shining too because the circuit is no longer closed. Christmas tree lights often work like this.
